What is Delikaasy?
Delikaasy is an app and cheese database from Hamburg, Germany, for everyone who wants to discover cheese. You search for cheeses, read up on origin, ageing and flavour, rate what you have tried, and get suggestions that match your taste. You also find cheese shops nearby. The app arrives on iPhone first.
What is the Delikaasy cheese database?
The cheese database is the core of Delikaasy: every variety is recorded against the same grid – not as prose, but in individual, identically named fields. That is what makes them comparable. You can filter, sort and set two cheeses side by side, instead of reading two descriptions and working out for yourself where they differ.
Is there an app like Vivino, but for cheese?
Yes. Delikaasy works for cheese much like Vivino works for wine: you look up a variety or scan its barcode, rate it, build a personal collection and see what the community thinks. On top of that, every cheese carries its origin, milk type, ageing and flavour profile – plus shops near you. The app arrives on iPhone first.
How do I find out which cheese I like?
By rating what you try. Delikaasy records every rating across nine taste dimensions – from intensity through acidity to creaminess – and condenses them into your personal taste profile. Suggestions for cheeses you have not met yet follow from it. The more you rate, the sharper the profile gets.
What are taste dimensions in cheese?
Taste dimensions are individual properties of a cheese that can be rated separately. Delikaasy records nine of them on a scale from 1 to 10: intensity, sweetness, saltiness, acidity, umami, bitterness, creaminess, juiciness and maturity. Splitting taste up this way is what makes it comparable – and explains why you like something.
Can I scan cheese with a barcode in Delikaasy?
Yes. Scan the barcode on the packaging and origin, flavour profile and ratings land on your phone without typing a name. If a cheese is not on file yet, you can look it up through search or submit it yourself. Scanning is part of the Delikaasy app and costs nothing.
How do I find a good cheese shop near me?
Delikaasy shows cheese shops near you on a map – shops that carry the variety you are looking at, staffed by people who have tasted it themselves. The route runs from the cheese to the shop, not the other way round.
What information is stored for each cheese?
Every cheese carries its origin, milk type, ageing and a flavour profile across nine dimensions on a scale from 1 to 10. Alongside that come the community’s ratings and the cheese shops that stock it. Every entry is reviewed before release; mistakes can be reported and are corrected.
What cheese groups are there?
Cheese is grouped by how much water it holds relative to its fat-free mass. German cheese regulation names six groups: hard cheese (56 per cent at most), sliceable cheese, semi-soft sliceable cheese, acid-curd cheese, soft cheese and fresh cheese (above 73 per cent). The more water, the softer the cheese. The group says little about flavour – which is why Delikaasy records that separately, across nine dimensions.
Is there a reference work where I can look cheeses up?
That is exactly what Delikaasy is built for. You look a variety up by name, filter by your own criteria or scan the barcode on the packaging. Unlike a cheese encyclopaedia on paper, the cheese database tells you not only what a variety is, but whether it suits your taste – and where to buy it near you.
Where does the cheese data in Delikaasy come from?
From publicly available sources, manufacturer information and user contributions. The entries are merged, processed by automated means and reviewed before release – only then does a cheese appear in Delikaasy. Taste data comes on top of that, from the community’s ratings.
How many cheeses does the cheese database hold?
There is deliberately no fixed number here. The collection keeps growing and every variety is reviewed before release – a number that is right today would be wrong within weeks, and there is currently nowhere to count it. Once there are public pages per variety, the number will be there and open to checking.
Can I use the cheese database in a browser?
Not yet. The cheese database lives in the app; this website explains what is in it but does not show individual cheeses. Public pages per variety are planned, with no date set. Until then the way in is the app – everyone on the waitlist hears first when it arrives.
When does Delikaasy launch, and for which devices?
Delikaasy arrives on iPhone first. There is no date yet: the app is still in development, and a date will only be named once it holds. Everyone on the waitlist hears about it first. No other platforms are announced at this point.
What does Delikaasy cost?
Using Delikaasy is free. Search, taste profile, ratings, collection and the map of cheese shops are part of the app. Joining the waitlist is free as well and commits you to nothing – one click unsubscribes you at any time.
